In the 30's she became well known for her body surfing ability, took up snow and water skiing and board surfing. She bought her first Harley Davidson motorcycle, joined a local bike club and rode all over the state for several years.
She married in 1939 had her first son in 1941 and her second, two years later. Her husband joined the marines shortly after World War 2 started and soon she found herself a single mother after a mortar shell on Iwo Jima took her husband. By then she was a driller and riveter at Douglas Aircraft.
